There are many misconceptions when it comes to making bespoke lace wigs and one of the biggest misconceptions in bespoke wigmaking is believing that every high-end custom handmade wig must be fully hand ventilated across the entire wig cap foundation.
While a fully hand-tied wig represents one of the highest levels of craftsmanship, it isn't the only bespoke wigmaking model...especially for solo/independent bespoke wig artisans.
In my business, I focus on just three premium wig types:
• Full Lace Wigs (High Tier)
• Bespoke Lace Front Wigs (High Tier)
• Refronted Lace Wigs (Mid-Tier)
Each serves a different purpose, client, and production strategy, while still reflecting the same commitment to luxury craftsmanship.
One of the biggest shifts I made in my own business was realizing that high-end craftsmanship isn't always measured by how many hours you spend making a wig...it's measured by where you spend those hours and how well you execute.
Your client's eyes naturally focus on the hairline, parting, and the areas where the hair appears to grow directly from the scalp. Those are the areas that deserve your greatest attention.
The luxury wig market has also evolved. While fully hand-tied wigs remain an incredible option (especially in film and theatre), many everyday clients today are becoming accustomed to lace front wigs with weft extensions sewn into the back because they offer the perfect balance of realism, durability, longevity, density, and wearability (this is why you must understand your target market).
That's why I incorporate both approaches into my business:
Rather than only hand tying full lace wigs, traditional bespoke wigmaking also includes strategically combining hand ventilation with custom wefts to create beautiful, natural-looking wigs without unnecessary production time.
This allows you to deliver premium quality while building a business that's sustainable as a solo artisan.
Remember...
Your goal isn't to create the most labor-intensive wig possible (unless your pricing model or production team supports it).
Your goal is to create the most beautiful result possible.
One lesson I always teach my students is to start small before taking on your largest projects. Before attempting a fully hand-tied wig, master the projects that build your confidence and technical foundation first. Every successful bespoke wigmaker develops their skills one technique at a time. Those early wins will prepare you for more advanced bespoke wig projects while helping you refine your craftsmanship without becoming overwhelmed.
